Kyiv Polytechnic students win AI Labeling Sprint
Students of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute won the AI Labeling Sprint, a national competition designed for youth engaged in humanitarian demining and committed to making this work safer through technology.
This hackathon aimed to create a training database for detecting explosive objects, using drones and artificial intelligence, was organised by:
- Ministry of Economy of Ukraine;
- Centre for Humanitarian Demining;
- UADamage (Ukraine’s reconstruction platform), supported by the UNDP and the Luxembourg Aid & Development government organisation;
- and the National Mine Action Platform.
Among the 10 competing teams from Ukrainian universities, Kyiv Polytechnic was represented by students from:
- Institute of Aerospace Technologies,
- Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management,
- Institute for Applied System Analysis,
- Faculty of Informatics and Computer Engineering, and
- Faculty of Sociology and Law.
Sustaining a five-hour sprint, Kyiv Polytechnic students processed 200 drone images, detecting and classifying explosive objects. More importantly, they trained AI that will assist deminers in rapidly and safely identifying threats in contaminated areas – an innovation, which will speed up the demining process in Ukraine.
The clear winners were the Smart Hackers team of students from the Institute of Aerospace Technologies. The accuracy of their results was highly estimated by the expert jury, which included demining specialists, IT analysts, and environmentalists.
Congratulations go to the winning team members:
- Yurii Yurchuk
- Maxym Varzar
- Semen Dmytriiev
- Pavlo Chernenko and
- Yaroslav Zahumnyi.
For their outstanding performance, Smart Hackers received a $2,000 cash certificate to carry out groundbreaking tech projects.
As Ukraine looks toward its victory and reconstruction, it is clear that innovation, collaboration, and the indomitable spirit of its youth will play a crucial role in reclaiming its land.
