On February 15, 2024, Huawei Ukraine, in collaboration with Atmosphere-Distribution, inaugurated a Digital Power Lab at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. This state-of-the-art digital laboratory, dedicated to the utilization and conversion of solar energy, will be equipped with cutting-edge Huawei technology. The establishment of this laboratory is poised to unlock numerous opportunities for educational, scientific, and societal advancement, while also fostering the growth of renewable energy across various sectors of the Ukrainian economy.<\/p>

Investments in scientific and educational advancement are pivotal as they yield rapid returns and facilitate the realization of progressive ideas. Students enrolled in the Department of Renewable Energy at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Automation, which houses the Digital Power Lab, will have the opportunity to engage in both theoretical and applied research. They will analyze and optimize photovoltaic systems to enhance their operational efficiency.<\/p>

“Thanks to the support of our strategic partner Huawei Ukraine, we are opening a Digital Power Lab at the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automation.<\/em> This laboratory will serve as a bridge between the faculty and the high-tech energy industry, as it uses modern technologies that will now be presented here.<\/em> With their help, the best innovative students will be able to work on new developments and acquire all the competencies required by leading companies, which will make them successful and in-demand specialists in the energy sector.<\/em> I am grateful to the partners who helped to implement this project, as well as to the teachers of the faculty, who are innovators and move very quickly in the implementation of new technologies<\/em>,” comments Mykhailo Zgurovsky, Rector of Igor Sikorsky<\/strong> Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.<\/p>

The inception of this smart lab will facilitate multifaceted student training, ranging from undergraduate and graduate theses to doctoral studies, all supported by data obtained through system monitoring. The Digital Power Lab will be equipped with top-of-the-line Huawei technology, including the SUN2000-450W-P high-performance solar energy optimizer, SUN2000-5KTL-L1 inverter, LUNA2000 battery, and LUNA2000-5KW-C0 power supply. With access to innovative equipment, students will cultivate skills in sustainable development and explore environmental preservation solutions. For instance, the Huawei SUN2000-450W-P optimizer, boasting a power output of 450 W, features module-level monitoring for analyzing and optimizing panel performance, thereby enhancing system safety and efficiency.<\/p>

Additionally, students will utilize the Huawei SUN2000-5KTL-L1 5 kW single-phase inverter, which converts direct current from solar panels into alternating current. The inclusion of the AFCI function enhances safety by preventing arc faults, a critical aspect for research endeavors. Furthermore, the solar PV system is supplemented by the Huawei LUNA2000 10 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, enabling the storage of surplus solar energy generated during the day for use as backup power during periods of low generation or sunlight scarcity.<\/p>

The inaugural smart laboratory, Digital Power Lab at KPI, not only features energy production and storage equipment but also incorporates a real-time energy conversion process monitoring system for scientific research purposes. This comprehensive equipment set facilitates electricity generation, fosters energy independence, embodies the “Green University” concept, and ensures continuous energy supply for educational activities.<\/p>

The launch of the Digital Power Lab marks a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to train highly skilled professionals sought after in the renewable energy market. Through knowledge acquisition and research conducted with modern equipment, students will not only acquire a robust theoretical and practical foundation for their future careers but also contribute to industry development and efficient energy utilization.<\/p>
