Kyiv Polytechnic student pursues internship at CERN lab in Geneva
Viktoriia Tarasenko, a master’s student at the Department of Electronic Devices and Systems of the Faculty of Electronics (FEL) at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, participated in a high-energy physics research programme at CERN — the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, based in Geneva, Switzerland.
From March to July 2026, Victoria Tarasenko has been engaged on a project to analyse data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN under the prestigious University of Michigan (USA) programme. In particular, the Kyiv Polytechnic student was developing heuristic optimisations of deep neural network models for machine learning to improve precision in analysing experimental data on the quark-gluon plasma and the tWZ process (top quarks and W and Z bosons) by means of stochastic Monte Carlo methods. She also pursued the automatic selection of neural network hyperparameters for multiclass classification through covariance matrix analysis, without calculating gradients.
This was Victoria Tarasenko’s second research internship at CERN. The high credits she earned from the University of Michigan have reaffirmed the high calibre of instruction provided at the Faculty of Electronics.
A knowledge of programming, numerical optimisation methods, big data analysis, and machine learning are currently key tools for tackling complex, real-world scientific tasks in many projects. Gaining such experience during their studies opens up new horizons in research to the students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and equips them to develop innovative technologies that respond to today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
