Autonomous solar power plant starts operation at Kyiv Polytechnic
A new solar power plant has entered operation at the Kyiv Polytechnic’s Yevhen Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding (IMSW) on February 6, 2025. Henceforth, 43 panels, each with a capacity of 580 watts, will ensure the uninterrupted operation of the Center for the Collective Use of Scientific Equipment “Materials Science of Refractory Compounds and Composites” housed in IMSW academic building No. 9. In particular, the Center includes modern laboratories for Rigaku X-ray diffractometric analysis and mass spectrometry, sample preparation, as well as optical and electron microscopy.
This became possible through the cooperation between the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. A bilateral agreement worth 1.4 million Ukrainian hryvnias was concluded in October 2024 to develop the scientific infrastructure, and the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Institute’s building was completed in January 2025.
With this achievement, Kyiv Polytechnic takes another vital step toward energy independence and sustainability. At present, the university intends to scale up this experience.
