How to combat disinformation: Romanian experts deliver lecture, discuss potential partnership
Romanian scientist and lecturer Mihai Vacariu, known for his research on the communication theory, philosophy, and the cinematography, together with Nicolae Mocanu, Director of TVR Moldova – the branch of the Romanian Television Society (TVR) operating in the Republic of Moldova, visited the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute to deliver a lecture. The guests were accompanied by Ukrainian poet, writer and civic activist Oksana Stomina.
In particular, the Romanian experts delivered a public lecture on the theme “Practical Case Studies in Combating Russian Disinformation: 2024 Romania’s Presidential Election,” addressing the mechanisms of propaganda dissemination, Kremlin’s key disinformation narratives, and the warfare tools of influence actively used during electoral processes.
The format of the lecture included a Q&A session, offering representatives of the university administration, teaching staff, and students the opportunity not only to hear expert opinions but also to ask questions. Specifically, the following aspects were under discussion:
- how modern disinformation works, undermining trust in government institutions, influencing electoral processes, and exacerbating the polarisation of society;
- tools of voter manipulation during election campaigns, including the use of social media, emotional triggers, fake campaigns, and other outreach schemes to influence the public;
- disinformation as a tool of authoritarian regimes and a serious threat to democracy;
- tried-and-true methods for countering disinformation.
Special attention was paid to Romania’s experience in countering disinformation, as well as to its role as a key partner of Ukraine on its path towards European integration.
In addition, the administration of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the Romanian delegation convened for a working meeting to discuss prospects for partnership with Romanian universities, and participation in joint European projects.
