Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute expands global outreach, research horizons

The key theses from the report delivered by Andrii Shysholin, Vice-Rector for International Relations, outline the progress of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute over the last year, with a focus on the period from August to December 2024, in the context of the university’s Development Strategy for 2025-2030.

Over this period, Kyiv Polytechnic welcomed 46 international delegations from 17 countries and 19 delegations representing the diplomatic corps from 12 countries. Among them was the delegation of Amazon Web Services, visiting Ukraine for the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The number of international travels and traineeships of academic and administrative staff increased by 44%, which is an important step towards the upskilling of university specialists. The numbers speak for themselves – 217 travels abroad and 194 traineeships abroad, including online programs.

Further expanding its global partnerships, Kyiv Polytechnic signed 24 new international agreements, bringing the total to 117, and added 13 new international partners, now totalling more than 170.

Kyiv Polytechnic continued to expand its international cooperation through membership and participation in European alliances and associations:

  • Full membership in ATHENA.
  • Associate membership in the T.I.M.E. Association (Top International Managers in Engineering), laser focused on double master’s degrees in engineering (57 members in 25 countries, a network of leading technical universities and engineering schools).
  • Submission of applications for associate membership in ECIU and EPUC.
  • Active interaction with CESAER, UNICA, EUA, BSUN and ECHA associations.

Furthermore, Kyiv Polytechnic attained membership in the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, a global organization that sets standards for university rankings and promotes the principles of transparency and academic excellence. This organization comprises more than 60 universities, research institutions, academic and analytical organizations, including Elsevier.

Thanks to the annual funding, the university was able to join the work of seven CESAER task force groups offline (58 leading technical universities in 28 European countries), particularly at TU Wien, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, as well as the high-level CESAER Annual Meeting 2024 for all task force groups, hosted by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2024, the university secured funds for over 24 new research projects from grant funding under various programmes, including Horizon Europe, Euroatom, Horizon 2020, Digital Europe, ERASMUS+ K2, and NATO Science for Peace and Security.

Kyiv Polytechnic’s international partnerships translated into tangible advancements on its campus. More than 26 million Ukrainian hryvnias worth of charitable contributions and logistical support were received from international partners, which helped to establish a laboratory with the concept of a smart building at the Faculty of Electronics and a Digital Power Lab at the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, as well as to renovate the DataCom laboratory at the Radio Engineering Faculty, and install equipment for the educational process at the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management, among others.

With these achievements, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute reaffirms its commitment to academic excellence, global collaboration, research and innovation, driving the university forward.
