Kyiv Polytechnic ranks among world’s best in 5 Subjects
The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of five subjects in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Of these, four remain unchanged. Additionally, the institution ranks in one broad subject area (Engineering & Technology).
Remarkably, Kyiv Polytechnic remains the Ukraine’s highest-ranked university, placing first in narrow subjects such as Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing, Materials Science, Computer Science & Information Systems, and Engineering – Electrical & Electronic. The university also leads Ukraine in Engineering & Technology, ranking first in this broad subject area.
The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 25 March 2026 by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 18,300 individual university programmes, taken by students at more than 1,900 universities in 100 locations around the world, across 55 academic disciplines. In addition, five broad faculty areas are assessed (Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management).
Ukraine has 25 programmes ranked across 12 institutions. Of these, two climb the table, 11 drop, eight remain unchanged, and four rank for the first time.
QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of more than 200,000 employers and academics to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.
The precise weighting of each metric varies by subject to reflect differing publication cultures across disciplines. For example, research performance, based on the analysis of the bibliometric database Scopus/Elsevier, is deemed to be a stronger indicator of institutional strength in Medicine, where the discipline is highly reliant on dissemination of research, than it is in Performing Arts, where the discipline is more vocational in nature.
