THE, Schmidt Science Fellows to explore HEI’s contribution to interdisciplinary science

On February 15, 2024, the ICD staff attended the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings masterclass conducted by Times Higher Education (THE), focusing on the analysis of interdisciplinary science research.

The masterclass addressed the following points:

– The methodology for the new ranking, and how institutions are submitting their data.

– The links between inputs, process and outputs in evaluating interdisciplinary science.

– The global and regional trends evident in the research undertaken so far.

THE has partnered with Schmidt Science Fellows with the aim of developing new measures exploring universities’ contribution to interdisciplinary science.

Duncan Ross, THE’s chief data officer, commented that to be successful in the new ranking, universities should focus on more dedicated policy processes to enhance interdisciplinary science research, highlighting:

  1. Physical facilities.
  2. Administrative support and staff incentives.
  3. More funding for interdisciplinary science research as a percentage of overall research funding.
  4. Further collaboration with both the Global South and the Global North to raise the impact and reputation among academics.

In terms of interdisciplinary research outputs, Hong Kong and Singaporean universities are leading the way.

At the same time, institutions in India and China focus heavily on interdisciplinary research.

Universities in the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia are less successful in terms of interdisciplinary research.

Data collection for the new world ranking from universities will continue until March 30.

The new ranking launch is scheduled for November 2024.
