Dialogue, diplomacy, determination: Kyiv Polytechnic representative joins U.S. Open World exchange program
In a time when Russian drones and missiles darken the sky over Ukraine, the light of international cooperation continues to shine. Dr. Andrii Shysholin, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, has commenced his participation in the Open World exchange program – a flagship initiative of the U.S. Congress that brings together global changemakers for dialogue and collaboration.
This year’s theme – Reforming Higher Education in Ukraine During Wartime – is a mission Dr. Shysholin undertakes with great responsibility as a representative of Kyiv Polytechnic.
The Ukrainian delegation’s journey began in Washington, D.C., where they took part in insightful meetings at the Open World Leadership Center and engaged in conversations with U.S. policy and education experts.
The program has since continued in Oregon, where members of the Ukrainian delegation have started their professional exchange at Oregon State University.
One of the most inspiring moments came during the meeting with the Mayor of Corvallis and members of the local community. Their intense interest in Ukraine’s future, straightforward questions, and warm welcome served as a reminder to Andrii Shysholin of the powerful value of people-to-people diplomacy – especially at this challenging time.
Currently, Ukrainian universities are not merely enduring but they are evolving. Despite the sinister war, Ukrainian academics continue to teach, to research, and to innovate. Furthermore, they seek out global partnerships with those who believe that education must continue – even under fire of Russian war criminals.
Sincere thanks are due to the Open World Leadership Center and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine for making this meaningful experience possible.
In the spirit of solidarity and determination, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute continues to build new bridges – between institutions, across oceans, and through dialogue.
