Kyiv Polytechnic students win 1st and 2nd places in Youth Climate Innovation Hackathon

More than 30 students from Ukraine’s top technical universities took part in the inaugural Youth Climate Innovation Hackathon, dedicated to advancing solutions for climate innovation and challenges. Students from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute distinguished themselves by proposing the most effective solutions for decarbonising industry, developing renewable energy and mutual aid energy clusters. The hackathon was organised by the Kyiv School of Energy Policy in conjunction with the Ukrainian Climate Office.

It is important to note that participants in the hackathon tackled real-world climate challenges facing businesses, with case studies prepared for the teams by KNESS, DTEK Renewables, iSolar, and UNIT.City/UDP Renewables.

The Green Wave team (Anastasiia Vorontsova, Maryna Shevchenko and Mykola Sheveliuk) took first place. They presented a simulator for selecting the optimal ratio of solar and wind power in joint projects with a single connection point. The talented students study at the Kyiv Polytechnic’s Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management (IEE). A student from the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics joined this team as well.

The second place went to the GreenVibe team, made up entirely of Kyiv Polytechnic students. They came up with a solution for creating a hardware-and-software platform for direct electricity exchange between industrial parks and communities. Specifically, the team included Olena Balan from the IEE, Uliana Boichuk (Faculty of Management and Marketing), Yaroslava Stetsenko (a graduate of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biotechnics), as well as Denys Vasiutiak and Ivan Zahorulko (Faculty of Electronics).

The hackathon highlighted the excellent example of cooperation between business, academia, and government, shaping the new generation of climate leaders in Ukraine, capable of creating practical solutions for sustainable reconstruction and the green transformation of this country.

The Youth Climate Innovation Hackathon was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany (BMWE) as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and co-financed by the European Union.
