Kyiv Polytechnic at 69th IAEA General Conference

The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has taken part in the 69th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, joining the Ukrainian government delegation led by Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Energy of Ukraine. Specifically, Rector Anatolii Melnychenko, and the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Andrii Shysholin, represented Kyiv Polytechnic.

Within the framework of the Conference, the Kyiv Polytechnic delegation held several meetings with representatives of the IAEA Division of Human Resources, the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS), and the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN). During these meetings, Kyiv Polytechnic was presented as Ukraine’s leading technical university, particularly in the realm of power engineering, which is taking bold, proactive steps to strengthen its energy independence in spite of full-scale Russian invasion.

In a meeting with Roula Sabat, Section Head, HR Management at IAEA, discussions focused on programmes to engage students in internships, the organisation of special lectures with the participation of IAEA experts, and potential assistance in organising new educational programmes at the university.

At the meeting with WINS Academy, the following issues were under discussion:

  • scholarships available for master’s students;
  • access for Kyiv Polytechnic students and staff to certified WINS Academy online courses on nuclear security, cyber security and risk management;
  • involvement of Kyiv Polytechnic lecturers in the development of new training modules and participation in international projects;
  • expansion of cooperation with international donors and partners.

It is worth noting that Kyiv Polytechnic already cooperates with WINS, including:

  • translation of the training module on radioactive source security into Ukrainian in collaboration with Kyiv Polytechnic lecturers;
  • launch of three online training cohorts with mentoring support for students and young professionals;
  • establishment of a dedicated test centre at the Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy, outfitted with a generator, soundproof booths and modern equipment for conducting online examinations on WINS Academy modules.

At the meeting with ENEN representatives, discussions centred round opportunities for cooperation in training specialists in nuclear power engineering, joint educational programmes, and involving students in international educational initiatives.
