Education, engineering, ecology: Kyiv Polytechnic inaugurates ESG Reboot initiative
The inaugural ESG Reboot event “Education, Engineering and Ecology in United System of Responsibility” took place at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
This is the first major event initiated by the Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FCE) in partnership with the ESG Liga PAEW (Professional Association of Environmentalists of the World) and the Office of Sustainable Solutions.
For the first time at this level within the university, the subject of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) was presented and discussed as an interdisciplinary approach, encompassing environmental responsibility, social aspects and quality management. The event brought together representatives of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, the Faculty of Sociology and Law and the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management – not as passive attendees, but as active discussants, moderators and speakers.
The event featured messages, including trust as a new currency of responsibility, the power of data to shape the impact economy, and the role of youth as a driving force of changes. Inspirational speeches were delivered by key figures including:
- Liudmyla Tsyganok – Founder of ESG Liga, CEO of the Office of Sustainable Solutions, and PAEW President;
- Serhii Stirenko – Vice-Rector for Research at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute;
- Olena Ivanenko – Acting Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering;
- As well as representatives of government agencies, businesses and the expert community.
It is important to note that Kyiv Polytechnic students had the opportunity not only to learn about real-life applications of ESG principles, but to glean practical advice.
Particular emphasis was placed on career prospects for students in areas such as ecology, sustainable development, ESG analytics and consulting. Speakers from leading companies – among them ArcelorMittal, Ernst & Young, Farmak, METRO Ukraine, Esmil Process Systems Ltd, L’Oréal Ukraine, and Ukraine’s state-owned and main railway carrier Ukrzaliznytsia – introduced students to new requirements for emerging professions.
Some examples of effective interaction with stakeholders as a result of this ESG Reboot event include expanded cooperation with Ernst & Young, as well as cooperation on military environmental challenges, encompassing research, analytics and relevant educational initiatives.
ESG Reboot demonstrated that youth is not an object of changes, but their driving force. The event underscored to need to continue uniting the key stakeholders of sustainable development in the academic environment of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
