Open Science for HEIs: Kyiv Polytechnic showcases institutional toolkit at Ljubljana seminar
A training seminar took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 2-6 June 2025 within the framework of the Erasmus+ Open4UA project – Open Science for Ukrainian Higher Education System. A delegation from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and representatives of Ukrainian and international universities – partners of the consortium – participated in the event.
The main purpose of Kyiv Polytechnic’s delegation was to present university’s lines of approach to the promotion of open science at the international level, share the first results of piloting new practices at higher education institutions (HEIs), and form partnerships in research data management.
Kyiv Polytechnic was represented at the seminar by:
- Georgii Vasyliev, Associate Professor at the Department of Electrochemical Production Technology and head of the Kyiv Polytechnic’s project team;
- Ivan Pyshnograiev, Associate Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence and the Open4UA project team member.
The seminar focused on practical solutions that facilitate the transition of Ukrainian universities from declarations to the real implementation of open science. In particular, the discussions addressed the following topics:
- Formulation and implementation of open science policies at the university level, both European and Ukrainian;
- Efficient research data management, including the formulation of institutional policies and data management plans (DMP);
- Role of research data management specialists – a separate session was devoted to the best practices of EU universities in training such personnel.
Kyiv Polytechnic’s delegation gave a presentation on the institutional toolkit for open science implementation at HEIs. The toolkit was developed under the project work package led by Kyiv Polytechnic. The toolkit can be used to generalise open science practices at Ukrainian HEIs. A special emphasis during the seminar was placed on the topic of research data management. A representative of the University of Ljubljana shared the experience to implement data steward roles. This is especially relevant for Ukraine, where a professional standard ‘Research Data Management Specialist’ is currently being elaborated on the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science. Remarkably, the Hryhorii Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library at Kyiv Polytechnic has already appointed the first such specialist in Ukraine. These activities are part of a systematic effort to increase the visibility of Ukrainian science in the world and ensure the full integration of Ukrainian researchers into the European scientific community. As a national trailblazer in the initiative, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was the first among Ukrainian universities to implement an open science policy as recently as 2022.
