New Course from the Baltic University Programme: Introduction to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

The BUP Course Platform now offers a new free massive open online course (MOOC). All courses can be accessed independent of time and place, as full distance courses. Anyone can take a course whenever, as a self-paced learning course. For the new course, contributions have been made by colleagues from Åbo Akademi University, Uppsala University, Wageningen University, University of Helsinki, and Kaunas University of Technology.

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) is an educational and research network connecting over 110 universities in the Baltic region and beyond. Its mission is to promote sustainable development, environmental protection, and democratic governance by providing platforms for interdisciplinary education and international collaboration. BUP organizes courses, seminars, research projects, and exchanges, focusing on key regional issues like environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

All courses on the BUP Course Platform are developed by colleagues who work in the BUP working model, which means to work in inter disciplinary and intercultural teams of cooperation. Colleagues contribute with their knowledge and experiences in developing the course materials. This way of working offers opportunities to learn from each other and different perspectives as well as different academic cultures.

The course Introduction to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) consists of four parts:

  1. Introduction and background
  2. Transformative learning and learning for change
  3. ESD and sustainability competencies
  4. ESD in practice
