The Centre for Humanitarian Demining is opening in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute

In the early summer of 2023, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute began cooperation with the Japanese company Cognitive Research Lab Co., Ltd., which specialises in next-generation computing with a focus on secure networks, innovative solutions and artificial intelligence. Since 2023, the company has been developing its security business – cognitive defence, cyber defence and comprehensive security consultancy, including economic security.

After more than six months of intense work, the university and the company have developed clear mutually beneficial areas of cooperation:

1. Research in the field of space technology and cybersecurity:
The university and the company will actively cooperate in the development of advanced scientific developments in the fields of space technology, electromagnetic engineering, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

2. Modern technologies for humanitarian demining and training of Ukrainian specialists:

– Support for research and development and modern demining technologies.
– Development and implementation of a bachelor’s degree course in humanitarian demining.
– Short-term training of trainees who will be engaged in humanitarian demining in the future.

3. Innovative entrepreneurship and implementation of innovations:
Development and implementation of innovations in SMEs aimed at addressing current security and humanitarian demining issues.

4. Online education:
Expanding online education opportunities for training specialists in the field of humanitarian demining.

All these areas are included in the Memorandum of Understanding between Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and Cognitive Research Lab Co., Ltd. which was solemnly signed on 31 January 2024.

As part of the planned cooperation, it is envisaged that the first joint steps will be educational activities in the field of humanitarian demining – the creation of the Centre for Humanitarian Demining Technologies and a bachelor’s programme in humanitarian demining.

The impetus for this was the current situation in Ukraine, which is related to the high contamination of the territory of Ukraine with various explosives (over 170,000 km2) and the need to restore the affected areas.

Given the very high demand for highly qualified specialists in this field and the lack of specialised educational institutions, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute decided to focus on comprehensive training of specialists capable of effectively influencing the situation with humanitarian demining. The joint development of curricula and the provision of modern equipment to the centre will ensure high-quality training and provide the necessary tools for effective work in the field of humanitarian demining.

It is planned that the KPI bachelor’s programme will cover geographic information systems, environmental monitoring, explosion and demining theory, pollution prevention, and territory restoration.
